Extract from the Application to the Charity Commission for charitable status


Object 1

The charity’s objects are to benefit the residents of Maindee and the neighbouring communities of Newport, South Wales, without distinction of gender, sexual orientation, race or political, religious or other opinions, and specifically:

To advance education

By providing and supporting others to provide training, education courses, and other community-based educational activities and facilities including:

  • play opportunities for children and young people.

  • pre-school language, thinking and play.

  • single and mixed gender provision for people who speak English as an additional language

  • participative, expressive, educative and empowering youth work

  • parenting support groups

  • adult education classes.

Object 2

To develop the capacity and skills of the members of the community in such ways that they are better able to identify and help meet their needs and to participate more fully in society

By undertaking community development work and by supporting and facilitating other local and national organisations such as Mind, Sure Start, WEA and Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations

  • to provide services and facilities for disadvantaged people,

  • to offer impartial advice, guidance and signposting

  • to increase employability by providing volunteering opportunities.

  • to support the development of viable community organisations and activities


Object 3

To provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents
By directly using the Community House building and by hiring and letting space in the building to other organisations and individuals to

  • provide recreation and leisure time activities which increase social and community activity and improve the quality of life for local residents generally

  • provide facilities for social interaction which meet the needs of vulnerable, isolated and disadvantaged members of the community, examples include a weekly lunch club.

  • encourage and enable participation by local people in the life of the community and the management of Community House, for example through user group forums and public events.


Object 4

To promote health and wellbeing

  • By providing facilities and activities which support healthy lifestyles, such as Local Health Board funded aerobics and exercise classes

  • By supporting families, particularly those facing stress, and organisations which deliver this support such as the Dads r Us group

  • By undertaking community activities which encourage co-operation and mutual understanding between groups and individuals from different cultural and religious backgrounds 

  • By fostering a caring local community, by bringing individuals and groups together in Newport, and by networking nationally and globally with other organisations to explore solutions to relevant local concerns.

  • By providing and maintaining a Community Peace Garden which encourages quiet reflection and relaxation, and encouraging peacemaking.
